About the Social + Interactive Media Centre

The Social + Interactive Media Centre is a new research centre that supports a wide range of applied social, interactive and design projects. Funded by a 5-year grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the centre offers BC companies a way to tap the design, creative and technical expertise of Emily Carr faculty and students. The Centre's research program engages BC companies as collaborators in uncovering new ways to use social technologies and tackle interactive design challenges. 

The applied research capacity of the SIM Centre gives BC companies direct access to the innovative thinking, design skills and research expertise of BC's most creative faculty and students.

Our partners span the technology and creative sectors, including everything from web and software developers to film and animation companies, design firms and product manufacturers. These companies turn to the SIM Centre for expertise in areas including:

  • product design and innovation
  • interaction design
  • communications, web and print design
  • collaboration, distance learning and virtual work
  • animation and filmmaking, including stereoscoping 3D
  • social media strategy and development
  • storytelling, creative content and multimedia development 
  • content management and curation
  • tangible computing 

The SIM Centre can support industry partners by:

  • convening research teams that engage Emily Carr's renowned faculty and students in addressing your company's design, innovation and research challenges
  • placing coop students in your company to work on design and creative projects with NSERC support
  • engaging Emily Carr students in classroom projects that can present your company with a variety of alternative design approaches and creative ideas
  • matchmaking your company with complementary industry and research partners to develop new projects and business opportunities

In addition, the Centre hosts workshops and events that connect tech and creative companies to the latest reseach and thinking on digital media and design. Through Centre events companies can meet new partners, innovators and researchers to support their own research, development and business growth.
