In Istanbul: ISEA 2011

Glen Lowry
As I was trying to get my bearings in Istanbul, surfing on line in my place at the Three Apples Suites (just off Taksim). I was struck by this rather beatific reflection. I will have more to say about ISEA 2011 and the Istanbul Biennial and the panel that  Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry invited me read more »

The post-reading generation talks about the future of books

Alexandra Samuel

This post originally appeared on SIMCentre.ca.

Today I got to be a (tweeting) fly on the wall in Jonathan Aitken’s ebook design class. Somewhat to my amusement, Jonathan began by explaining how old people like us used to read in linear way, where you flip through pages in order. The explanation seemed less amusingly superfluous once a quick show of hands revealed that the vast majority of students had read fewer than 10 books in the past year. (OK, I’m not doing that much better myself, but I have kids — useful not only for their steady supply of amusing Facebook anecdotes, but as an iron-clad excuse for not reading more.)

Once we got into discussion mode, what was really interesting was how reverently these not-very-book-consuming young people talk about the role and value of books. Some representative comments:

Glen Lowry
ENGL 100: Introductory Lecture Notes I’m sure others have said this, but I think the start of Fall term should be the beginning of the new year. For those of us working and studying in North American colleges and universities, the day after Labour Day, first day of classes, might be replace Jan. 1 as read more »

Think I Can Sync Up My Death with Google Calendar?

Jill Silva

What is Elysium? Simply put, it is "The next generation of social media subdermal implant". This next generational idea was planted, molded and digitized by the Vancouver-based conceptual designer Desmond Wong

Desmond Wong is a recent Emily Carr graduate from the Industrial Design program. Like all fourth-year students before and beside him, Wong was required to create a thesis project that explored a concept through his chosen program. Via design and integrated media, Wong has spun a satirical tone into his social media-based thesis project, Elysium.

Back to school at the juncture of art & social science

Alexandra Samuel

Walking through the front doors of Emily Carr today after a few days in political science land was a reawakening to the extraordinary. The gallery by the front doors was bursting with fresh pieces, including something that requires you to put on headphones and look at a painting of birds. The young man coming down the stairs as I went up was wearing a NSFSS* jaunty cap. The bathrooms had a new crop of inspiring graffiti.
